One person died in a car crash Friday night in front of Poway High School, the sheriff’s department confirmed.
Two vehicles collided along Espola Road near Sandhill Road at around 7:15 p.m., according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.
Investigators say a Mercedes was heading southbound on Espola and broadsided a Toyota as it pulled out of the high school’s parking lot.
The driver of the Toyota was killed in the crash, and a teenage passenger in the car was hospitalized, according to deputies. A spokesperson for the Poway Unified School District said the victim wasn’t a staff member or a student.
The driver of the Mercedes was also hospitalized. A deputy was at the hospital waiting to evaluate the driver of the Mercedes for DUI, the SDSO said.
Northbound Espola Road is closed at Eden Grove, deputies said.
The SDSO is asking drivers to avoid the area.
