Art of Elan: Abstraction & Allegory Video Premiere – Friday, February 19, 2021, 7 p.m.

Friday, February 19, 2021, 7 p.m.

All over the world from, San Diego

As 2021 kicks off, Art of Elan and the San Diego Museum of Art continue their creative partnership and commitment to presenting musical interpretation of works in the Museum collection. Originally conceived as live “pop-up” concerts, both organizations worked to re-frame the presentations as part of the Museum’s growing Virtual SDMA+ programming. The Virtual SDMA+ Art of Elan Abstraction & Allegory Video Premiere will be shared on the San Diego Museum of Art YouTube channel and is available for free streaming thereafter. This multi-media performance video takes its inspiration from the thoughtful works of photographic art currently on display in Masters of Photography: The Garner Collection at the San Diego Museum of Art, which features iconic images by some of the most famous photographers from the 20th century to the present. As a direct tie-in to the exhibit’s “Manipulating Reality” theme, Art of Elan takes a closer look at the power of transformation, featuring two incredibly compelling pieces of music for solo clarinet and multimedia: “Advice from a Caterpillar” for bass clarinet from the opera “Alice in Wonderland” by South Korean composer Unsuk Chin, and “Jabberwocky” by Mexican composer Andrea González. This colorful and fantastical online program, featuring internationally acclaimed clarinetist Joshua Rubin, will be the world premiere performance of González’s work, which was inspired by the Lewis Carroll poem and was created for Art of Elan as a companion piece for this special Virtual SDMA+ concert.
