Genealogy buffs meet online for classes

North San Diego County Genealogical Society will present a webinar DNA Foundations Class at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Stacey Sanders will discuss “Transfers and Third Party Transfers.” The society will also present a webinar, “Getting the Most Out of Family Search Wiki,” from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday led by Jamie Lee Mayhew, and a Beginning and Refresher Genealogy Class on “Wills and Probate and Land Records” from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. Chat group for Legacy users meets Tuesday

Drive-thru dinosaur show opens this week

The traveling Jurassic Quest drive-thru dinosaur show featuring more than 70 life-size animatronic dinosaur replicas returns Friday at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd. The exhibit, which runs through April 4, features dozens of prehistoric creatures re-created by paleontologists and displayed in realistic scenes. Visitors will be guided along with a digital audio tour (in English or Spanish). Guests can pose for a prehistoric safari-style digital souvenir photo (one per vehicle). Visitors are asked to stay in their cars and must wear masks if they leave the car in allowed areas. The show is from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Fridays and Sundays, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturdays, and closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Tickets are $49 per car and must be purchased in advance online at jurassicquest.com.

Climate change, plants topic of virtual program

The Salk Institute’s Women & Science program and Del Mar Garden Club host a virtual program on Fighting Climate Change with Plants from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday. The annual community outreach program will be presented by Salk professor Joanne Chory. Register at bit.ly/3vHPfq4.

Goodwill opens retail, employment center

The nonprofit Goodwill San Diego will open a new 17,000-square-foot Escondido Retail Store, Donation Center and Community Employment Center at 315 W. Washington Ave. at 8 a.m. Wednesday with a ribbon-cutting at 10 a.m. In addition, online services are offered, including appointments with a career adviser in English or Spanish, and free workshops including Ace the Interview, Job Application, Resume Builder, Workplace Communication, and Conflict Resolution. Donations sought for library’s Donor Wall

The Donor Wall at the main entrance of the Fallbrook Library, 124 S. Mission Road, is filled with names of people and organizations that played a role in the building of the library. In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the library’s opening, the library is offering the opportunity to add names of ongoing major supporters. Donations allow the Friends of the Fallbrook Library to provide library programs and expand the collection. Deadline for submitting donations is March 31. Upcoming blood drives throughout county

The San Diego Blood Bank holds several mobile blood drives in parking lots in North County this week:

Animal shelter holds virtual Kitten Shower

The San Diego Humane Society runs its annual virtual Kitten Shower through March 31 to collect supplies for the kitten season that begins in spring. Community members can donate items such as kitten formula, bottles, heating pads, scales and blankets from the Humane Society’s online baby registries. The donations will help provide around-the-clock care that the kittens need to survive. The nonprofit society is expecting to help more than 3,000 kittens under 8 weeks of age this season. Entries sought for essay, art contests

“Who is Your Hero?” is the prompt for the Flying Leatherneck Historical Foundation’s annual essay contest. Sixth- through 12th-grade students living in San Diego County qualify. Made-to-order boxes of books for sale at library

The Friends of the Oceanside Public Library are selling made-to-order boxes of books at their drive-thru book sales. Boxes of books are sorted by author or categories including fiction, nonfiction, romance, sci-fi/fantasy, children’s, cookbooks, mysteries, biographies and holiday CDs for $5 per box ($7 for oversized books). Paperbacks are sold by the bag, also for $5. The sales continue from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays behind the Civic Center Library at 602 Civic Center Drive. Participants will drive through the alley to the side door of the library and must remain in the car wearing face coverings. Registration open for Critter Camp sessions

Helen Woodward Animal Center kicks off its Spring Critter Camp on March 29. Children can interact with animals, create crafts, play games and more. Each day has a unique theme and a variety of species for kids to meet. Sign up for multiple days or come to just one. COVID-19 safety precautions will be followed. The Vista-based nonprofit Foundation for Women Warriors is hosting a Mother’s Day Drive, starting today and running through April 26. The community can show appreciation for mothers who have served in the military by helping the foundation create self-care baskets with items such as books, bath products, yoga mats and candles. History museum opens for tours Wednesday

The Vista Historical Museum will open for scheduled tours starting Wednesday. Tours for up to six people will be offered from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. most Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and can last as long as two hours. Only one tour group is allowed in the museum at a time. All tours will include temperature checks and social distancing. Masks are required at all times.
