Iranian Classical Music in a Historical and Contemporary Context is the fourth of six programs in the Center for World Music’s Spring 2021 Virtual Encounters with World Music and Dance series. This program is a celebration leading up to Nowruz (Persian New Year) 2021. This live-hosted music and discussion event will explore the relationship between Iranian music and Persian poetry, the significance of the voice, and the close historical relationship between Iranian music and its neighboring musical traditions. This discussion will also consider how Iranian classical music has changed over time, how its traditional boundaries have been pushed, and how such transformations have been received by Iranians, both in Iran and within the Iranian diaspora. Kourosh Taghavi will address questions from the audience throughout the program. Registration is free. A link to the live stream will be provided in your confirmation email. If you’d like to support the artists and the program, donations will be welcomed.
