Foundation opens grant applications for teachers
The Cal Coast Cares Foundation has opened its application period for 2021 Educator Grants to help local teachers with classroom projects. This year, the foundation will award $40,000 in grants ranging from $500 to $2,000 per teacher. Applications are being accepted until Aug. 16 and can be completed at calcoastcu.org. The Educator Grants are provided to teachers in K-12 public, private or charter schools, and community and state colleges/universities in San Diego or Riverside counties with funds to support special classroom projects related to any of the STREAM fields (science, technology, reading, engineering, arts, and math).
Cox hosts computer, e-waste drive
Cox Communications and Computers 2 Kids, San Diego will host a weeklong drive that kicks off with its “Back-to-School Computer and E-waste Drive Through Event” from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Cox Communications’ main campus parking lot, 5159 Federal Blvd., San Diego. The public can drop off items such as unused computers, laptops, tablets and printers, as well as other e-waste, at the drive-thru event. The technology will be refurbished by the nonprofit Computers 2 Kids for low-income students and families. Computers 2 Kids uses Department of Defense National Industrial Security standards to sanitize all reusable hard drives. Two students receive four-year scholarships
Two area students recently received Amazon Future Engineer Scholarships. They were among 100 students nationally chosen for the scholarship from underserved communities, and among 14 from California. Kenna Chase of Classical Academy High School in Fallbrook and Benjamin Hong of Torrey Pines High School in San Diego will each receive a four-year, $40,000 scholarship and guaranteed paid internship at Amazon after their freshman years of college. P.E.O. Scholar Award recipients announced
The P.E.O. Chapter VL recently named Anny Reyes and Zanjbeel Mahmood as recipients of its P.E.O. Scholar Award. P.E.O. International is a philanthropic organization that gives female students scholarships and grants. The Scholar Award is for women in the United States and Canada who are pursuing doctoral-level degrees. Chapter VL’s recipients, who will each receive a $20,000 award, are both doctoral students in the joint San Diego State University/University of California San Diego clinical psychology program. Mahmood is an intern at the Veterans Hospital in Los Angeles and is looking at assessments to better identify interventions to improve cognitive and functional performance and quality of life for older adults and those with severe mental illness. Reyes is interning at Emory University in Atlanta, continuing her research on reducing the health disparities that exist in the diagnoses and treatment of patients with epilepsy. Palomar seeks committee members
Palomar College is asking local residents to fill two vacancies on its Independent Citizens’ Oversight Committee, which reviews the expenditure of Proposition M funds. The vacancies are for one person who is active in a business organization representing the business community located in the district, and one member who is active in a senior citizens’ organization. The committee remains in place while the remaining funds from Proposition M general obligation bonds are allocated to existing and future projects. Candidates must be at least 18 years old and must live within the Palomar Community College District, which stretches from Camp Pendleton and part of Oceanside in the west, to Borrego Springs in the east, and from the Riverside County line to Poway and Rancho Peñasquitos in the south.
