This 3rd century AD monk’s horrendous experiences of temptation are the subject of numerous famous paintings as in the Timken’s intriguing rendition of the torment of St. Anthony by Giovanni Girolamo Savoldo. Many people linger very thoughtfully before this masterpiece. Is there still dialogue to be had with Anthony? Looking into the reasons for his impact as a very early Christian monk, as we will do in this presentation, offers a broader canvas for us to explore his significance. Join Timken Docent and USD Professor of Biblical Studies Dr. Florence Gillman for virtual talks about the actual people who have inspired some of the Timken’s masterpieces.
