San Diego restaurants prepare for Super Bowl Sunday amid pandemic

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Many restaurants are looking to create an enjoyable Super Bowl experience while also following public health orders and keep everyone safe.

“Since we’re only able to do outside (dining), we built some wonderful parklets,” Kevin Templeton, the executive chef at Barleymash, said. “We have social distancing. We’re putting TVs up, and we’re adjusting indoor TVs to point outside. We’re going to blast music, get some speakers outside, just to get that vibe.”

“We want everybody to practice social distancing and come in smaller groups,” he added. “We want to do everything right. We don’t want to get anyone sick.”

At Kansas City BBQ on Harbor Drive, the bar famously known as the ‘Top Gun bar,’ is also a long time Chiefs bar.

“We’re extremely excited for the team and for the game,” Owner Martin Blair said. They also plan to put TVs in their outdoor area. But they will be limiting service to reservations only.

With being limited to social distancing, even in the patio, we have very limited seating,” Blair said, “so we’re limiting our customers to our historic chiefs fans that are all coming in and wearing red.”

During a news conference, Wednesday County officials urged people not to hold gatherings for the game, warning it could be a super spreader event

“We’re going in the right direction. Let’s not take a step back,” Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said. “Just this year and this game, watch it at home, watch it with the people you live with.”

The county says it was going to increase enforcement.

The San Diego Police Department said It was going to increase enforcement as well. They say officers will respond to complaints about businesses, or in the case of residences, they will respond to noise complaints.
